Broil the corn

Broil the corn until the tips of the kernels just start to brown. Brush with melted butter again when done and season as desired. This method allows you to start the corn cooking while grilling the main course, and then to finish the corn off on the grill, giving it that distinctive grilled flavor.

A slightly different method is to pull back the husks but leave them attached. Remove the silk and rinse as before. Gather the husks at the end of the cob (where they are attached) and tie them together to form a handle. Brush butter and seasonings on the cob. Put the cobs on the grill with medium heat, cooking for 10-12 minutes. A piece of foil placed under the husk handles will keep them from burning. The corn will be a golden brown color when done.

Grilling corn directly in their husks is the other way to roast corn.

Prints do not

Prints do not give you a valid reference point!

Summary: if you want prints go for print film. Slides if quality or scanning.

2. Next choice is film speed.

As with everything else in life, choosing the film speed is an exercise in compromise. Slower film speeds (smaller ISO) have a finer grain but the greater light required means slower shutter speeds and could interfere with picture taking. Faster film speeds allow for faster shutter speeds but the increased grain size can be distracting.

ISO 100 or slower for the finest grain. Use in good lighting conditions such as bright sunny days.

ISO 200 is a good general purpose film for slower lenses such as those found on compact cameras or zoom lenses. In print film this speed has all but replaced ISO 100 as the quality of modern films have grain comparable or better than last year’s ISO 100.

ISO 400. Where you require faster shutter speeds for action shots or in medium to low lighting conditions. Grain is getting noticeable at this speed.

ISO 1000 or faster. Use in low lighting conditions such as indoors and at dusk.

Fortunately, enhanced mental clarity

Fortunately, enhanced mental clarity is well within reach for most of us. It may take a little work and discipline, but the payoff is well worth it. With mental clarity, we are more efficient, more productive, and therefore more successful. In addition, we are aware of everything that is happening in our lives, and that’s a huge boon. With awareness comes enjoyment – after all, as far as we know, we only get one life, so why waste it through impared mental clarity?

One way to enhance your mental clarity, believe it or not, is to start with your physical wellbeing. If you are frequently tired, or if you are out of shape, your mind is likely to be ‘fuzzy’. You may have a hard time concentrating. If you are healthy, rested and in shape, your mental capacity is much greater than it would otherwise be. When your body is taken care of, your mind can function to its full capacity. Exercise itself has an excellent effect on mental clarity. Some people say that going for a brisk walk or jog, or to the gym, allows them to ‘shake out the cobwebs’, so to speak.

To achieve this, men

To achieve this, men and women had no limits; any method, safe or not, was used, as being pale was extremely important.

Asia: white skin is considered a symbol of femininity

The tanning obsession and later, the sunless tanning craze took over the world. Still, there are white “spots” on the worldwide tanning roadmap. Asian people are not so excited with golden skin. And this has a lot to do with their millenary culture, somehow reluctant to these trends.

What do Asian females have and others don’t? There are few differences to take into account. Teams of scientists and dermatologists who have studied eight Asian cities (Sendai, Japan; Seoul, South Korea; Guangzhou, Shanghai and Harbin, China; Calicut and New Delhi, India; and Manila, Philippines (representative of Malay skin) have some interesting findings to reveal:

1. Hyperpigmentation (dark spots) has an earlier onset than wrinkles and laxity (loss of firmness) on Asian skin (compared to Caucasians).

2.

As well as this they

As well as this they wear out much more rapidly, give a rougher ride, particularly on Irish rural roads. Over inflated tyres also wear out rapidly and unevenly leading to more frequent replacement. Good for the tyre shop but not for you! Oh yes a soft tyre will pick up foreign bodies much more easily, leading to further replacement and expense.

(2) An untrained

Right Foot

is a leading cause of excessive expenditure during all driving activity. Accelerating too hard, braking too hard, and driving too fast in general all contribute to excessive fuel usage and the corresponding increase in noxious emissions. Kyoto here we come?

(3) The speed for

optimum fuel consumption

has been recognised over the years to be 55mph or approximately 90kph. As you increase your speed above this level your fuel consumption increases dramatically.

(4)

A poorly tuned engine

will also use an excessive amount of fuel so the money spent on proper professional servicing will repay you in the end although at the time it may seem expensive.

(5)

Open windows and sun roofs

contribute to drag and an increase in fuel consumption but clearly you can?t drive safely if you are about to expire from heat exhaustion.

Defense attorney: Blagojevich is honest, ‘didn’t take a dime’

CHICAGO

An attorney for Rod Blagojevich declared Tuesday that the former Illinois governor is an honest man who “didn’t take a dime” of illegal money and simply trusted the wrong people to handle his fundraising before he was ousted by corruption allegations.

In a theatrical opening statement, attorney Sam Adam Jr. outlined for the first time how the defense plans to fight charges that Blagojevich tried to sell President Barack Obama’s old Senate seat and sought to use his office to line his pockets and those of insiders.

“The guy ain’t corrupt,” said Adam, whose remarks seemed at times more like a tent revival than a courtroom presentation. He said Blagojevich and his wife will both take the stand.

Adam walked briskly back and forth across the courtroom, alternately shouted and whispered, and pointed his finger with his arm extended. He said Blagojevich was fooled by people close to him and was a poor judge of their character.

“Not a single penny” of ill-gotten money went into Blagojevich’s campaign fund or the former governor’s own pockets, he said.

“You have to be comatose not to figure out how to get a dollar out of $52 billion,” Adam said, referring to the Illinois state budget. “But who didn’t? Him!” he said, indicating his client.

Hours earlier, a federal prosecutor told jurors that Blagojevich conducted “a series of illegal shakedowns” in which entities that got state funding would also contribute to his campaign

Women on top in battle of the sexes

Women on top in battle of the sexes

0 Comments | Western Daily Press, Jul 26, 2010 | by Eleanor Mcgillie

I love newspapers and don’t understand why some people choose not to read them.

I have to say though, I do laugh at some of the stories published. More and more frequently I have noticed an increase in the number of articles published on the battle of the sexes.

This week I have read articles on how women are most desperate when they are 37, how men feel most agitated when their other half gets behind the wheel and how men become more handsome as they get older whereas women are made to feel more vulnerable.

Now, in all seriousness, what is it all about? One bit of research though which did interest me was that almost one third of women in the workplace are earning more than their partners, putting them increasingly in the role of breadwinner.

According to the Women and Work Survey 2010 commissioned by Grazia magazine, almost half the 2,000 females who were questioned were out-earning their partners and 19 per cent were earning as much. Also, one in ten already had a house husband.

Now, a couple of weeks ago I wrote about Generation Y women – the 20-somethings who are content to give up financial independence and stay at home to look after children. This provoked a lot of reaction from women reading this column

A lawsuit loan

A lawsuit loan is advance money provided to someone fighting a lawsuit, generally a personal injury case. This money is provided on a no-recourse condition, which means that if the plaintiff loses the lawsuit, he or she is under no obligation to pay back the money. In case he or she wins compensation for the injury, the loan amount is settled from a part of the compensation paid to the plaintiff.

A lawsuit advance is a risky investment for any financial institution, as there is no guarantee of repayment. The high risk involved, which can be difficult for the investor to evaluate, means that the lender will charge a high rate of interest for the said loan. Because of this risk factor, most banks have not entered the lawsuit loan market. It is also for this reason that such a loan is considered as an investment by most lenders, even though there is no guarantee for the return of the money.

Despite the high rate of interest, a plaintiff often has no option left but to go in for such a loan.

Novel by Scots author Warner in the frame for Booker Prize

0 Comments | Herald, The; Glasgow (UK), Jul 28, 2010 | by Phil Miller

SCOTTISH writer Alan Warner is in the running to win the most prestigious award in literature, the Man Booker Prize for fiction.

Warner, from Connel, near Oban, has been included on the longlist for his novel The Stars in the Bright Sky.

The writer, whose other books include Morvern Callar and The Man Who Walks, wrote it as a sequel to another work, The Sopranos. Elsewhere in the list, Peter Carey, with Parrot and Olivier in America, could become the first author to scoop the prize three times, although Andrea Levy’s The Long Song is the bookies’ favourite to triumph.

Warner’s book was among 13 the award judges believe will provoke and entertain.

The list, whittled down from 138 works, also includes previously shortlisted authors David Mitchell, Damon Galgut, Howard Jacobson and former Booker judge Rose Tremain.

Carey won in 1988 for Oscar And Lucinda and 2001 for True History Of The Kelly Gang.

However, William Hill, the bookmaker, has made Levy’s book favourite this time, followed by Mitchell’s The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet.

Jacobson, longlisted twice before, appears with The Finkler Question. Galgut is nominated for In A Strange Room, while Tremain’s novel Trespass is a dark tale set in the region of Cevennes in France.

Sir Andrew Motion, chair of the judges, said authors’ past works had no bearing on the panel’s choices.

He said: “Here are 13 exceptional novels – books we have chosen for their intrinsic quality, without reference to the past work of their authors.

“Wide-ranging in their geography and their concern, they tell powerful stories which make the familiar strange and cover an enormous range of history and feeling.

“We feel confident that they will provoke and entertain.”

The winner of the Man Booker Prize for Fiction will receive pound(s)50,000 and can look forward to a sales boost and worldwide recognition.

Each of the six shortlisted authors, including the winner, will receive pound(s)2500 and a designer bound edition of their book.

Last year’s winner was bookies’ favourite Wolf Hall, Hilary Mantel’s novel about Henry VIII’s adviser Thomas Cromwell,

This year’s shortlist will be unveiled on September 7. The winner will be announced on October 12.

Beech Mountain Issues Water Advisory

0 Comments | Standard – Speaker; Hazleton, Pa., Jul 8, 2010

A mandatory water conservation advisory has been issued for residents of the Beech Mountain section of Butler Township.

Residents are urged to refrain from watering lawns and washing cars until the advisory is lifted.

Total Environmental Systems, Inc., Drums – the water and wastewater services provider in the Beech Mountain development – said the advisory has been issued, in part, due to extreme temperatures and high non-essential water use. TESi has contracted with a leak-detection company to check whether a leak in the water delivery system is causing problems with the Beech Mountain water system.

The advisory will be lifted when the issues are resolved, the company said.

Any customer who experiences dirty water, low water pressure or sees any unusual puddles of water is urged to report it to TESi as a soon as possible. Call 1-800-580-6883 and be sure to report the address location of the problem.
