I know that my father and brother are upset at what I am doing. I know my boyfriend says I’m perfect. But only a boob job will end my torment – and I’ll do what I have to to get it

DAINTILY perched on a large black leather sofa in her sitting room, Sarah O’Brien looks younger than her 21 years. She is demurely dressed in a bright white, scoop-necked T-shirt, teamed with a pair of baggy blue jeans. Her auburn hair is swept up into a bun and a pair of blackrimmed, rectangle-shaped glasses frames her luminous grey eyes. She could easily pass for a teenage schoolgirl out of uniform, enjoying her summer break.
Watching her animatedly chat away about the years she spent growing up in Clane, Co. Kildare, you are struck by her childlike enthusiasm for telling a story and the way she turns to her older sister, Mechelle, for affirmation about the finer details of her anecdotes.
Hard to believe, really, that this is the young woman who caused a storm of controversy when it was revealed last week she has been posting questionable photographs of herself on a lurid American website in a bid to raise enough money to get a breast enlargement. Quite frankly, she just doesn’t seem the type.
But, according to Sarah, she was left with ‘no choice’ but to pose in her underwear for a series of ‘saucy snaps’ and to engage in webcam chats with strange men who ‘donated’ for the most part rather small sums of money to her virtual account.
Once her goal was reached, her plan was to find a surgeon who would finally give her the figure she has been desperate for. Despite her boyfriend, Ciaran, repeatedly declaring that he is more than happy with Sarah exactly as she is, the shop worker says she has spent years feeling inadequate and ashamed of her shape. Her lack of bust has, she says, left her at times feeling very depressed. She never wanted to ‘degrade’ herself on a sleazy website – it was just her ‘last resort’.
But Sarah’s internet appearance on ‘myfreeimplants.com’, where she earned a grand total of $409, and her subsequent photoshoot for a red-top tabloid, has caused her to become a national figure of controversy and a target for harsh criticism. Radio talk shows have devoted hours to discussing her desperate attempt to ‘bag new boobs’. She has been branded a ‘slut and whore’ on Facebook sites, and neighbours and acquaintances in Clane have spent the last number of days openly gossiping about her as she walks by.
Perhaps most damaging of all, however, has been the effect it has had on her family. One brother is refusing to speak to her and her father seems to wish it would just go away – when approached by the MoS, he said he ‘had no interest’ in discussing his daughter’s antics.
It was not supposed to turn out like this. But while one can certainly question the wisdom of Sarah’s decision to go on a decidedly vulgar website, the desperation she feels about the size of her breasts is clearly genuine.
‘I’ve been dreaming about implants ever since I realised it was never going to happen (a bigger chest),’ she told the MoS. ‘I always hoped and prayed they would grow
